Remember a time when you had to drive somewhere during a downpour? You stood by your front door remembering that the umbrella was already in the car. You are hoping the rain would let up just enough so that you could make a dash for the car and not get soaked. Once you got in the car you stared at the windshield and said to yourself, “How am I going to drive in this”?
Have you ever thought about how important the windshield wipers are during a rain storm? Without them we would not be able to go anywhere safely when it rains. We would need to look through the splattered raindrops on the windshield moving our head back and forth while they slowly made their way up the windshield, then finally to the top as fifty or more other raindrops continued to splatter and cloud your vision.
Remember the last time you were in an emotional downpour, or maybe you are in the middle of a downpour right now. The rain may stop in a few hours or it could go on for days, maybe even years. Depending on how hard the rain gets, you may need to put the wipers on the fast or slow speed. Are they in good working condition or is the rubber torn and hanging off, not able to be effective. It truly matters what condition the wipers are in and how clear the windshield is during the storm. A windshield wiper is an important tool just like God is in the storms of life.
“The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are
the everlasting arms; He will thrust out the enemy from
before you, and will say, ‘Destroy!’ – Deut. 33:27
We are constantly getting hit by storms. When they come, what condition are you in and how clearly do you see through the rain? Is your heart equipped for the storm just like a wiper in good condition or is your vision blocked by the constant downpour? In Mark chapter 4 we see where the disciples had trouble seeing in a storm. Their boat was getting battered by waves and their vision cloudy because of the rain. What did their wipers look like? Their wipers were at full speed, out of control and not effectively clearing the way. “Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘Peace, Be Still!’ And the wind ceased and there was a great calm”. – Mark 4:39. Jesus calmed the storm but continued in vs. 40, ‘Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?’ Do you allow the Holy Spirit to be your wipers and control your vision?
If you’re not seeing clearly through a storm just remember that God is the cleaner that we spray on the windshield when it’s dirty and the Holy Spirt is the mechanism that controls our hearts like the windshield wipers in a storm. The condition of our heart can determine how clearly you can see God in the storm.
“Blessed are the pure in heart, For they
shall see God” – Matthew 5:8
